Modern kitchen appliances offer a wide variety of sleek designs, sizes, and finishes to blend in with your kitchen decor.  Many appliances use "smart" technology, with microprocessors and electronic sensors, to give their users the optimum cooking experience.  Some innovative refrigerators and dishwashers are designed with pull-out drawers instead of doors!  A notable trend is the use of commercially-styled or commercial-grade appliances in high-end kitchens.  Every year, there is a broader and more sophisticated variety of small kitchen appliances from which to choose.

Basically, a kitchen appliance is a human energy-saving device that uses electricity or gas energy to perform some common kitchen or cooking task.  In the kitchen, appliances are used to refrigerate food, open food containers, chop and blend food, cook foods and heat beverages, and dispose of food scraps.  There are a large number of appliance brands and models vying for the consumer's attention, so the kitchen appliance market is very competitive.  If you are considering a kitchen renovation project or an expensive appliance purchase, you may first wish to read the Consumer Reports appliance reviews.

Appliances can be classified as major appliances or small appliances:

gourmet kitchen appliances

  • Major kitchen appliances are sometimes built-in.  They include refrigerators and freezers and cooking appliances such as ranges, ovens, and cooktops, as well as near-the-sink appliances such as dishwashers, trash compactors, and disposal units.  Selecting the major appliances for your kitchen requires careful analysis of your needs before you shop.  New appliances are a major expense, and with all the dazzling features on today's models, it is important to select models and sizes that fit your family and lifestyle.  After all, some of these appliances have a life expectancy of 15 years or more!  Not only do you want to select models that fit your kitchen style, but also those that meet your level of gourmet expertise.  Consumers want appliances that are practical, fashionable, and energy efficient.  Furthermore, cooking shows have contributed to homeowners' desires for pro-chef level appliances.  As a result, manufacturers are offering pro style appliance lines, safely modified for those who aspire to be gourmet chefs at home.

  • Small kitchen appliances are usually portable.  They can make everyday life easier and more convenient, whether it's cooking food in a college dorm, brewing coffee at the office, or preparing a meal after a busy day.  Small appliances include coffee makers, blenders, and food processors as well as mixers, toasters, and can openers.  There are styles and colors to suit every kitchen and a wonderful variety of appliances to cook everything from popcorn to pizzas.  Just as with major appliances, pro-look small appliances are a popular choice.

We do not normally service the small kitchen appliances but in some cases we may be able to do so or assist you in locating a servicer to help you with your needs.

Ranges

When it comes to buying a range there are two types to choose from, Gas or Electric To learn about each type, click the links to the corresponding word.

Type

Ranges, both gas and electric, come in three general forms. Free-standing, slide-in, and drop-in.

Free-Standing RangeFreestanding units generally have the back plate which in most cases the controls can be found. Most free-standing units are 30 inches wide, but models in 20-inch, 24-inch, 36-inch and 40-inch widths are available.

Slide-in RangeSlide-in units are very similar to freestanding but don’t have the back plate. Instead, the controls can be found to the side of the burners on the cooktop or on the front of the appliance.

Drop-in RangeDrop-in units sit on a low cabinet base and they do not have a lower storage drawer, like the free-standing or slide-in appliances do. The controls on a drop-in are located in the same places as a slide-in.

Drop-ins and slide-ins are typically 30-inches wide; but can come in other widths.

WALL OVENS

Wall ovens or built-ins function the same as any range, just without the cooktop. They were designed to free up space in the kitchen, and to give it a custom look. There are single wall ovens, double wall ovens, single wall oven with microwave, or double wall oven with microwave, or a combination of any of these, with or without a broiling or storage tray.

These types of appliances also come in a few different sizes, 24-inch, 27-inch, and 30-inches wide. Their heights vary depending upon the combination you choose. The important thing is to measure, measure, measure! It would be best to have a contractor come to the site and do the measure prior to you shopping around.

Now here are some things to be aware of when shopping for a built in oven.

Gas Wall Oven or Electric Wall Oven

If you step into any chef’s kitchen you’ll discover that most use electric, convection ovens. Higher-end models of ovens have other technology that combines the use of microwaves and baking to produce an almost perfect meal. GE calls theirs "trivection", but I’m only going to cover the basics here. Chef’s prefer convection ovens for their fast and even baking. Convection ovens have a fan inside of the cavity that circulates the heat evenly throughout the cavity to produce that even bake..Of course this technology comes with a price. So if a convection oven is out of your price range, most heavy cookers would prefer electric wall ovens for their even baking abilities.

Gas Cooktop And Other Cooktops

When it comes to a gas cooktop, induction cooktop, and electric cooktop. There’s not a lot of information to retain. They are used to clear up space in the kitchen, and give it a less cluttered look. Cooktops can be placed anywhere in the kitchen and are great for island applications. There are two basic sizes, 30-inches wide, and 36-inches wide (But I have seen up to 40-inches). Their depths are all the same at about 22-inches deep (bottom of the unit to the top). There are also three different surfaces available; porcelain-enamel, ceramic-glass or sealed tops that keep spills from going underneath the unit.

Types

First step to choosing the best cooktop for your home is to decide whether you want gas, electric, or induction.

Ventilation

Ventilation is very important when installing a cooktop. You must decide where you want to place the ventilation; in which a range hood would be used; or a downdraft ventilation. With a downdraft, fumes are pulled down, and led out of the house. You will know if the appliance has a downdraft because it will have a long vent, usually located in the middle or at the top of the appliance. It may also have a pop-up downdraft that is located across the top which pops-up when in use to pull fumes down. One advantage of using a range hood rather than a downdraft for your ventilation is that you do not have to have ducting leading out of your home. Range hoods have carbon filters inside of them which purifies the air and re-circulates it back into the kitchen.

Energy Efficiency

Like ranges, these appliances are not considered to be energy efficient appliances. So don't waste your valuable time comparing energy consumption. If any brand name claims to be ENERGY STAR, double check with Energy Star this is a government site that will inform you of every energy compliant appliance made in the U.S.

REFRIGERATOR'S

When it comes to buying a refrigerator there are several things to keep in mind.

As with any appliance, you want to choose something according to how it benefits you, not according to how many features it has. Never let a salesman sway you in a certain direction based on the features of a product. So what, if a fridge has a T.V. in it? BIG DEAL! If I already have a television in the kitchen, or don't really watch T.V. that screen on my refrigerator door just becomes an extra expense and another thing to fix later on.

Instead, you want to make a checklist of all the issues you have with your current fridge. You definitely want your new one to be anything but a headache, so start with what ticks you off about your current machine, THEN move on to extra features.

Here I’m going to list some common issues consumers have...

Capacity

Refrigerator capacity varies on a large scale, you can go from 1.1 cubic feet up to 30+. The question is, what will fit? If capacity is not a concern of yours, I’m telling you to make it one! Better to have room and not use it than have too little room and need another fridge. And we definitely don’t want that headache. So keep this in mind, get the largest capacity that will fit in your space.

So we’re clear lets understand what the capacity is. It is the usable space inside of the fridge and freezer combined. Now with this said, let’s take a look at the different types.

We have…

Types of Refrigerators

Appearance

The next important thing to consider when shopping for a fridge is its' appearance.

Fit/Dimensions

Another big thing when it comes to buying a fridge is getting one that will fill the space in your kitchen. Many people make the mistake of going to see what they want first and then measuring. BAD IDEA! Chances are you'll see something you just LOVE, all to buy it and find out it won't fit! Measuring first will save you some heartache and time.

Freshness

Here’s another topic you may have never thought about… FRESHNESS! Many people have the wrong idea about the function of a fridge. Most people think the whole purpose is to keep your food cold, but the real purpose is to keep your food fresh not cold. And in order to keep your food fresh, you need more than just a cold box.
